Jhūmar or Jhoomar (also called Ghūmbar in Sandal Bar) is a traditional Punjabi folk dance in Pakistan, originating from the Sandal Bar and Chaj Doab regions of Punjab.[1][2][3] The word "Jhūmar" comes from Jhūm, which means 'to sway' in Punjabi. Jhumar is usually performed at wedding ceremonies in Punjab.[4] The dance is also performed in a circle, to the tune of emotional songs.[4]
Origin
[edit]Jhoomar is the traditional Punjabi folk dance that originates from Sandal Bar and Chaj doab regions of Punjab. The dance is also called Jungle-dance of Jhang-Sials of Sial dynasty which has a tribal sounding beat - 16 beats on the drum per cycle - believed to date back to Aryan period.[5]
