The North Fairfield Baptist Church
A short distance to the northwest of the Chester A. Arthur State Historic Site stands the North Fairfield Baptist Church. It holds a significant place in Vermont's history. Reverend William Arthur was called to preach at this very site shortly before the birth of Chester. The present brick church, constructed around 1840, replaced the earlier church that stood on the same spot. Despite the advancements in technology, the North Fairfield Baptist Church has never had electricity.
Donated to the State of Vermont
In 1970, the Vermont Baptist State Convention, through the efforts of Consuelo Northrop Bailey, generously donated the Brick Church to the State of Vermont. This act allowed the historic church to be preserved for future generations to appreciate and explore.
Awe-Inspiring Location
Situated on a ledgy knoll, the Brick Church offers visitors a breathtaking view of a classic Vermont mountain range. The panoramic vista from the church is a sight to behold, showcasing the natural beauty and charm of the region.
Memorial Services and Weddings
The Brick Church continues to serve as a venue for memorial services and weddings. Its historic significance adds a unique and poignant touch to these special occasions. The timeless atmosphere of the church, combined with its picturesque surroundings, creates a truly memorable experience for those celebrating life's milestones.
Open to the Public
The North Fairfield Baptist Church is open to the public for viewing during the hours the Historic Site is accessible. Visitors have the opportunity to step back in time and witness the architectural and historical marvel that this church represents. Exploring its interior and understanding its cultural significance offers a deeper appreciation for Vermont's rich heritage.
