GARDEN VIEWS
An inside glimpse of the gardens from our Instagram feed
Even though our work to protect the planet happens year-round, Earth Day is still a powerful reminder of why it matters. A call to care for the land beneath our feet, the birdsong in the branches, and the wildflowers swaying in the breeze. 🌍🌿
As the Botanic Garden of Texas, everything we do is rooted in our mission to conserve and celebrate native plants — not just for their beauty (though they are stunning), but for the vital role they play. Native plants feed pollinators, rebuild soil, cool the air, and bring balance to a changing climate.
🔔 And speaking of growing, we’re nearly 70% of the way to our Grow On fundraising goal, with just one week to go! Your support powers the beauty you see when you visit, and the behind-the-scenes work that keeps this ecosystem thriving. Give $30, ask a few friends to do the same, and help us continue our mission.

Garden cameo! 🐛 This vibrant visitor is a white-lined sphinx moth (Hyles lineata) in the making. Before they transform, these caterpillars can grow up to 3 inches long and come in a surprising variety of colors—green, brown, even black!
Love bugs? Great news! We’re seeking volunteers for our insectary. In addition to feeding and caring for the insectary’s current caterpillar residents, you’ll help search our gardens for new ones! To get started, complete a volunteer application: wildflower.org/volunteer

We’re thrilled to share that our own Andrea DeLong-Amaya, director of horticulture at the Wildflower Center, was recently awarded the 2025 Scott Garden & Horticulture Award! ✨
This national honor celebrates individuals who’ve made significant contributions to the art and science of gardening—and if you’ve ever strolled our trails, explored our gardens, or heard Andrea speak, you’ve felt that impact firsthand.
For more than 30 years, Andrea has championed landscapes that are resilient, ecologically rich, and rooted in the character of the land itself. She recently traveled to Pennsylvania to accept the award and visit some of the country’s most iconic public gardens, including Chanticleer and Longwood. 🏞️🌸

It takes more than sunshine and soil to make the Wildflower Center bloom. It takes people. 🌱 For 30 years, it’s not just the plants that have flourished here—it’s the community behind them that’s helped us thrive.
People who’ve pulled weeds in the summer heat, planted seedlings with quiet hope, or welcomed school groups full of energy and big questions. People who’ve shown up, year after year, because they care about this land and what it teaches.
Now, we’re halfway through our month-long Grow On fundraiser and we’re halfway to our goal! Help us celebrate 30 years by giving $30, asking a few friends to do the same, and supporting the next chapter of the Wildflower Center.

🌿🦉 It’s official, y’all! This morning, Austin City Council members Paige Ellis and Ryan Alter joined us beneath Athena’s nest to make a very special announcement: Athena is now the Owl Ambassador of the City of Austin! 🎉
It’s been a huge week for this mama. Her first owlet hatched on Wednesday, the second followed this morning, and now she’s got a shiny new title to her. Not to mention a beer named after her by @blueowlbrewing! If she racks up any more wins, she’ll need her own press secretary!
Athena’s been quietly capturing hearts for years from her perch. This moment isn’t only sweet, it’s a reminder of how connected we are to the wildlife around us. She’s become a symbol of what it means to live alongside nature and has brought people together in ways we never expected.
Stick around because the story’s still unfolding. We’ll be sharing more about this moment next week—so keep an eye out! 🦉🌱
A special thank you to @paigeforaustin, @cmryanalter and @austintexasgov!
