GARDEN VIEWS

An inside glimpse of the gardens from our Instagram feed

You’ve seen his owl photos—now meet the man behind the lens. 🦉📸 Bill J. Boyd is a talented photographer and dedicated owl docent who has volunteered his time at the Wildflower Center for 15 years.

In honor of the start of National Volunteer Week, we’re spotlighting Bill and the joy he brings to our community—both through his camera and his stories.

Garden cameo! 🐛 This vibrant visitor is a white-lined sphinx moth (Hyles lineata) in the making. Before they transform, these caterpillars can grow up to 3 inches long and come in a surprising variety of colors—green, brown, even black!

Love bugs? Great news! We’re seeking volunteers for our insectary. In addition to feeding and caring for the insectary’s current caterpillar residents, you’ll help search our gardens for new ones! To get started, complete a volunteer application: wildflower.org/volunteer

We’re thrilled to share that our own Andrea DeLong-Amaya, director of horticulture at the Wildflower Center, was recently awarded the 2025 Scott Garden & Horticulture Award! ✨

This national honor celebrates individuals who’ve made significant contributions to the art and science of gardening—and if you’ve ever strolled our trails, explored our gardens, or heard Andrea speak, you’ve felt that impact firsthand.

For more than 30 years, Andrea has championed landscapes that are resilient, ecologically rich, and rooted in the character of the land itself. She recently traveled to Pennsylvania to accept the award and visit some of the country’s most iconic public gardens, including Chanticleer and Longwood. 🏞️🌸

🌿🦉 It’s official, y’all! This morning, Austin City Council members Paige Ellis and Ryan Alter joined us beneath Athena’s nest to make a very special announcement: Athena is now the Owl Ambassador of the City of Austin! 🎉

It’s been a huge week for this mama. Her first owlet hatched on Wednesday, the second followed this morning, and now she’s got a shiny new title to her. Not to mention a beer named after her by @blueowlbrewing! If she racks up any more wins, she’ll need her own press secretary!

Athena’s been quietly capturing hearts for years from her perch. This moment isn’t only sweet, it’s a reminder of how connected we are to the wildlife around us. She’s become a symbol of what it means to live alongside nature and has brought people together in ways we never expected.

Stick around because the story’s still unfolding. We’ll be sharing more about this moment next week—so keep an eye out! 🦉🌱

A special thank you to @paigeforaustin, @cmryanalter and @austintexasgov!
