Marathi
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘤𑘰𑘢 (bāpa, “father”), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀩𑀧𑁆𑀧 (bappa), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀩𑀸𑀧𑁆𑀧 (bāppa). As per Tulpule's A Dictionary of Old Marathi, the prakrit form originates from the Sanskrit वप्तृ (vaptṛ, “father”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]बाप • (bāp) m
Usage notes
[edit]- The term is most commonly used in pair with आई (आई-बाप; parents), when one's parents are being referred to in the third person.
- In colloquial usage, referring to one's father using the term is limited to informal contexts, at times bordering on perjorative, with the synonym वडील being preferred.
