Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘤𑘰𑘢 (bāpa, “father”), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀩𑀧𑁆𑀧 (bappa), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀩𑀸𑀧𑁆𑀧 (bāppa). As per Tulpule's A Dictionary of Old Marathi, the prakrit form originates from the Sanskrit वप्तृ (vaptṛ, “father”).

बाप • (bāp) m

The term is most commonly used in pair with आई (आई-बाप; parents), when one's parents are being referred to in the third person.
In colloquial usage, referring to one's father using the term is limited to informal contexts, at times bordering on perjorative, with the synonym वडील being preferred.
