Apr 4, 2025Music Can Hear Us lays out DJ Koze’s panculturalist ethos clearer than any of his prior studio releases, island-hopping from wispy echoes of son Cubano (“A Dónde Vas?”) to Japanese-language doo-wop (“Umaoi”) to, uh, Damon Albarn-fronted Afrobeats? .... To show the next generation how it’s done, DJ Koze throws two absolute heaters into the back half of Music Can Hear Us.

Apr 4, 2025It feels a little like walking around a city on the Sunday before a bank holiday, stopping at any bar or club you spy on your travels, thanks in part to Koze’s deft incorporation of various global dance styles.

Apr 9, 2025The first listen can feel overwhelming, as though you’ve stumbled, wide-eyed, into the yawning, spooky sonic wilderness with no map—unsure what to listen for or if it’s not very chill to ask yourself that question to begin with. But with time, the record reveals itself, its once-daunting terrain becoming familiar, navigable, and even irresistible.

Apr 4, 2025The deeply layered psychedelia here is consistent with his previous work — the frayed edges, the occasionally unsettling tones, the cosmic yearning cut with wryness. But something’s missing, and it isn’t just consistently prominent beats. In a catalog not especially heavy on brawn, this is Koze’s most purely amniotic recording.

MojoApr 4, 2025Whether it's the Damon Albarn-embellished Afro-pop of Pure Love or Buschtaxi's wonky take on reggaeton, delightful weirdness seeps from every pore. [May 2025, p.91]
