Patented Dec. 36, 1930 warren STATES PATENT oFFics GEORGE W. KRICK AND DANIEL G. ANDERSON, F LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA TABLE CONSTRUCTION Application filed January 11,1930. serial N 420,103. I
This invention relates generally to tables, more specifically tops for tables and the like composed of a plurality of wood sections.
An object of this invention is to. provide means for holding the sections forming a table top in tight engagement.
Another object is to provide a reinforcing construction for wooden table tops which will hold the sections of the top engaged, yet permit expansion of same.
A further object of this invention is to provide means for closing any cracks or crevices occurring between the joints of the sections forming a wood table top.
Other objects and advantages will subsequently appear from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a table top showing the improved reinforcing means constituting this invention, parts being broken away and shown in section;
Fig. 2 is asectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail cross section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4: is a detail cross section taken on line 4.-% of Fig. 2; a
Fig. 5 a detail cross section taken on line 55 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a detail cross section showing a modification Fig. 7 is a detail cross section taken on line 77 of Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a detail cross section showing-another modification;
Fig. 9 is a detail cross section taken on line 99 of Fig. 8.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, 10 generally designates a table top fcrmed of a plurality of strips including a pair of center members 12 and a pair of outer or end members 14, it being understood that the number of such members employed may be increased, and that the shape of the table top (in plan view) may be varied.
The center sections have horizontally disposed recesses 16 extending inwardly from the abutting edges forming an opening adapted to receive the swaged or flattened portion 17of a reinforcing rod The rod extends through apertures 19 formed in the center and end in embers,-each end of which projects into recesses 22 formed in the undersides of the end sections. 7 q
Assembly of the sections forming the table top is accomplished by first inserting the rod through the openings in each of the center. and end members, then placing. the other two members over the portion of the rod extending beyond the center member, a pair of plates 24 being placed above and below the swaged portion within the recesses 22 before the last two sections are assembled. Each end of the rod is threaded to receive nuts 26 which serve to hold together and tighten the sections thus 7 assembled, the swaged portion preventing turning of the rod while adjusting the nuts.
Although only one rod is shown by way of illustration, it will be understood that a plurality of rods are employed.
Combined lock and spring washers des ignated at 28 are mounted on each end of the rod within the recesses 22 and are positioned between plates 30 engaging the inner faces 31 of the recesses and plane washers 32 engaged by the nuts.
Any cracks or crevices which may appear between the sections due to shrinkage may be closed by tightening the nuts, the spring washers being of sufficient rigidity to draw the sections together yet yielding enough to accommodate any lengthwise enlargement of the sections due to expansion from moisture or the like.
It will be understood that the table top above described forms a unit which is adapted to be mounted on the usual side and end rails of a table superstructure and held in place thereon in any suitable manner.
Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate a modified form of the invention, the construction being the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 5 except that vertically disposed recesses designated at 34 are cut in the underside of the center sections, the lower open ends of which are preferably closed by a plug 35.
Referring to the modifications shown in Figs. 8 and 9, recesses 36 are formed in the center members in which is mounted a substantially square shaped tube or bushing 37 adapted to receive the swaged portion of the rod, the lower end of the recesses being closed by a plug 38.
From the construction it will be seen that by tightening the nuts any cracks which may occur between the sections may be closed, also that the yielding action of the spring washers permit expansion, thereby providing a table top of substantial and durable construction.
We claim:
A table top comprising a plurality of strips, a rod extending through apertures in alignment in said strips, said rod having a swaged portion resting in recesses formed in the abutting faces of the innermost pair of said strips, said rod having threaded ends projecting into recesses formed in the underside of the outermost pair of said strips, a plate mounted on each end of said rod and engaging the inner vertical face of the recesses formed in the outermost pair of said '7 strips, a spring lock washer mounted on each end of said rod engaging said plates, and nuts on the threaded ends of said rod engaging said spring lock washers.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
DANIEL G, ANDERSON. GEORGE W. KRICK.
