Beit known that I, WILLIAM MCWILLIE, a citizen of -the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Madison and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Rail-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in rail-fasteners.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of rail-fasteners and to provide asimple, inexpensive,and efficient device adapted to secure the ends of the rails together and to connect the same with the opposite rail, whereby the rails will be prevented from spreading and the gage preserved.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a track 'provided with a rail-fastener constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the railchair. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the clamp. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the tie-bar. Fig. 6 is a plan view, partly in section, illustrating a modification of the invention.

ldesignates a rail-chair consisting of one solid piece, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings, and adapted to receive the adjacent ends of a pair of rails 2 and composed of a horizontal bottom 3 and inner and outer sides 4, conforming to the configuration of the rails and forming lish-4 plates for connecting the same. The sides of the chair, which are integral with the bottom, are perforated forthe reception of bolts 5; but these may, if desired, be omitted, as the rails cannot, except by longitudinal movement, become disengaged from the chair. The chair is provided at its ends withlateral extensions or plates 6, larranged on the adjacent cross-ties and projecting laterally and longitudinally beyond the sides of the chair. The extensions or plates 6 are arranged in the same plane and form continuations of the nects the opposite rails, is recessed at opposite sides of its ends to form the reduced portions 10,and theinner ends of the transversely disposed extension-plates are also secured to the cross-ties by spikes 12. The lugs or tongues, which may be left in a vertical position, can be bent downward upon the upper face of the tie-bar, and the parts are thereby securely interlocked. The tie-bar is arranged at each end of the chair, and each tie-bar is connected with the opposite rail 13 by a clamp 14, consisting of a bottom plate andinnerand outerjaws or sides 15 and 16. The outer jaw consists of a continuous inwardly-extending upwardly-inclined lip or flange, and the inner jaws consist of approximately L.- shaped flanges, which lit against the inner face of the vrail 13 and which conform to the configuration of the same. The jaws 15 are located at opposite sides of an extension 17 of the bottom, and this extension is provided with a pair of upwardly-extending lugs or tongues 18, adapted to engage the adjacent reduced portion of the tie-barV 11. The clamps are secured to the cross-ties by suitable spikes 19, and they are firmly connected with and are adapted to support the rail 13.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings is illustrated a modification of the invention, in which the chair 2O is provided with a central lateral extension 21, which is cut from the bottom of the chair and bent outward, as shown.. The lateral extension 21 is connected with a tiebar 22, by means of tongues or lugs similar to those before described, and the said tiebar is connected with a clamp 23, constructed in the same manner as the clamp 14. The chair illustrated in Fig. 6 may also be pr0- vided at its ends with laterally-disposed plates or extensions, substantially the same as those illustrated in Fig. 3, but without the lugs, to enable the chair to be spiked to the cross-tie at each side of the rail.

The chair is adapted to be used as an ordinary rail-joint, and it may be spiked at the inner and outer sides by means of the laterally-disposed plates or extensions, and it will be clear that when the opposite rails are connected by the tie-bars they will be effectually prevented from spreading. It Will also be apparent that the construction is especially advantageous at sharp curves, where the pressure is heavy and Where there is great liability of the rails spreading.
The rail-chair is cut from a single piece of heavy metal and the clamps are made in a similar manner.
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a rail-chair composed of inner and outer sides, and a connecting bottom provided with transversely-disposed plates or extensions projecting inward and outward and located' at the ends of the chair beyond the inner and outer sides, and tie-bars secured to the plates or extensions at one end and provided at the other end with clamps, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a chair composed of a bottom,
and inner and outer sides and provided With a lateral extension having projecting lugs or tongues, a clamp provided with projecting lugs or tongues, and a tie-barhaving reduced portions engaged by the lugs or tongues, whereby it is connected with the chair and the clamp, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a chair comprising inner and outer sides and a bottom provided at the ends of the chair with transversely-disposed plates or extensions having tongues or lugs, clamps provided with tongues or lugs and having inner and outer jaws, and the tie-bars provided with reduced portions engaged by the tongues or lugs, substantially as described.
