After eight years in Midtown, international fine-dining Cantonese restaurant Hakkasan has closed. In an email statement to Eater, a representative for the Hakkasan Group confirmed the closure – “we have made the difficult decision to close our location due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19.”
Tucked away on W43rd Street in the heart of the Theater District, the New York outpost of the Michelin-starred international eatery has been closed since March, when all 95 members of staff were laid off. It opened in 2012 to mixed reviews from food critics, who labeled the menu overpriced and unimpressive, but they were eventually won over by Hakkasan’s dim sum and Peking duck. The restaurant’s dazzling dessert menu even earned itself a double-page spread in our September 2015 Style issue!
Founded by Alan Yau, who is also the creator of the Japanese chain Wagamana, the original Hakkasan opened in London in 2001 and was quickly followed by outposts in Mumbai, Dubai, Shanghai, and also Miami and Las Vegas. The San Francisco restaurant closed permanently in May.
Oh no. Their food was delicious. Loved the bar area. It had so much ambiance. Even though I no longer live next door, this makes me very sad.
