Good day. I know that I'm posting it here in github/docs but I just really need to. I submitted this using the survey form and gmail, yet there is still no response.
I think this will be another great feature to be added both for the benefit of the user and GitHub in general. GitHub has the original Traffic feature but it's almost useless because this is not in public view and it does not count the total views of a repo. Also, a release has the total downloads count but still will not do the job. The Views feature must be added just like my sample picture here.
I think if you will add this Views feature, this will make GitHub a true social networking site not only for software developers but for everyone (because the current thinking of most normal people, they are afraid of that purely code but they have no idea of the other non-code uses of GitHub). They will be encouraged to use this platform for writing stuff knowing it can go viral through views.
YouTube did exactly the same thing: counting the views. Now, take note of this one: YouTube also has the Like button but most of the time, it's really difficult to have so many likes even if the views were, say, already 1 million. The same is also true for GitHub repos: stars and forks tend to be just for big projects and small developers were being left behind even if they have a good small project.
For Views feature, every view of the repo will be counted even if it's not coming from GitHub, say, just a link shared in Facebook and YouTube. The most important one is we count every visitor of a repo, including non-GitHub user. This will boost the morale of the developer seeing that even though there are no forks nor stars for his/her particular repo, there are views that can accumulate over time and it's a fulfillment already. YouTube got its multitude users that way, aside from monetization, because knowing that a content can go viral (through views), they will be encouraged to do more.
I also have the prediction that GitHub will be used more and more not only in software development but as a writing tool in general because of it's simplicity compared to G Suite. I'm sure adding this feature will make another milestone, because, say one user is writing a novel here, a free novel, aside from collaboration, if there is the Views feature, he/she can use it to serve as the validation (that his/her work is actually trending), right? It can be used for monetization outside GitHub too. More and more will be using GitHub that way. G Suite is the current one known for this stuff but this feature can change the situation. There are others (including me) who were already using GitHub for these things but adding this feature will surely leverage you more than G Suite.
YouTube is for videos, Facebook for regular posts but I think GitHub will be known as the writing tool for everything in the near future, given this feature.
