Closing this PR since it has seen no activity for 5+ years, tests are failing, and there is feedback on the issue that was never addressed.

@mlouielu if you want to pursue this, you can reopen and update. It may be difficult to find an interested reviewer, though; Xavier is no longer working on Python/pdb as far as I know, and seems to be the only core dev who expressed interest in this feature.
