I'm following the instruction for Upgrading a Major Version. When I tried Updating Recipes, it gave me an error.

composer recipes:update
  Cannot run recipes:update: Your git index contains uncommitted changes.
  Please commit or stash them and try again!

I never used git before the upgrade and I don't understand why it wants me to commit to git now. Can I ignore this?
