Abstract

Many teachers find that the reading comprehension abilities of some of their students are lower than they would like. The ability to comprehend text is a skill that will be necessary for the advancement into institutions of higher learning and to pursue many career paths. This paper analyzes and synthesizes previous research regarding the use of graphic organizers to determine their effects on reading comprehension. This paper also suggests that websites for designing graphic organizers, such as Gliffy, Mindomo, and Webspiration can be valuable tools for students to use to help them increase their comprehension of a text. A comparison of these three online graphic organizing tools is presented to aid teachers in the selection of the tool appropriate to their needs.
