Funny and sad, exaggerated and honest, Youssef and Brady’s series offers escape and catharsis, all at the same time.
The show takes a bit of time to warm up. .... But when it hits the bullseye, it is something special. This certainly isn’t America’s happiest family, but there’s a lot of laughter mixed in with the pain.
#1 Happy Family USA is a bit uneven in the comedy department, but we’ll forgive that because whatever humor that comes out of the Hussein family’s attempts to blend into American society should be funnier than just one-off gags.
“#1 Happy Family USA” is a biting, insightful, and clever social animated satire, perfect for Youssef’s fanbase.
#1 Happy Family USA is broad and coarse and silly and, at its best, pointedly audacious in its desire to offend and possibly enlighten. It isn’t consistent, but it’s structured in a way so that much of its audience will be instantly alienated and the rest will be able to enjoy a show that settles into its voice as it goes along.
#1 Happy Family USA starts to tighten its focus as it goes on, finding a relatively comfortable comedic groove by the end. The animation style is nothing audiences haven’t seen before, but at least the show makes good use of the genre to dive creatively into Rumi’s visions and how he processes childhood trauma.
“#1 Happy Family USA” has moments of poignance and humor; surprisingly if problematically for a would-be family sitcom, it’s more effective at the former than the latter. But over eight episodes, it never quite lands on a consistent balance of the two, nor a sense of what it wants to be.
