In a review of the iMac G5, Detroit Free Press' Mike Wendland says, "The new G5 iMac is the finest personal computer I've ever used, hands down. Nothing comes close."

WSJ's Walt Mossberg said the same thing: "I am writing these words on the most elegant desktop computer I've ever used..."

The odd thing is, praise like this doesn't sink in until you actually see the machine.

I got my hands on one for the first time this weekend at the local Apple store, and it is absolutely, stunningly gorgeous. It's so simple and elegant, it makes the Luxo-lamp iMac look freakish and odd.

The screen is bright and beautiful and pivots beautifully on its stand. It is easy to move around. And though it doesn't look it, the iMac is rock-solid stable.

If I had two grand, no spouse, and hadn't just got a brand new iBook, I'd have bought it there and then.
